Italy is a parliamentary republic in which the President of the Republic serves as head of state while the Prime Minister, officially known as the President of the Council of Ministers, leads the government. Giorgia Meloni has served as prime minister since October 2022, while Sergio Mattarella continues as President of the Republic. Executive authority is exercised through the Council of Ministers, which directs national policy and oversees the administration of the state.
Italy’s Parliament consists of two chambers with equal legislative authority: the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate of the Republic. Governments must retain the confidence of both chambers, making coalition-building an important part of Italian political life. Current debates include inflation, energy prices, migration, taxation, public finances, education policy, European Union rules and Italy’s foreign-policy commitments.
Regional and municipal governments also play a major role in public administration, including health services, transportation, economic development and local infrastructure. Italy’s political system therefore combines national institutions in Rome with substantial regional and local authority, while membership in the European Union means many domestic policies are also influenced by negotiations, regulations and fiscal rules established at the European level.
